A NOVEL ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE INTERVENTION TO ADDRESSÂ CRE IN HIGH-RISK PATIENT UNITS
As hospitals globally combat the risk posed by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO), enhanced environmental hygiene can be a valuable addition to a comprehensive Infection Prevention bundle. In this educational webinar, Dr. Warren Lowman, Clinical Microbiologist & Infection Prevention and Control Specialist, Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC) in Johannesburg, South Africa, shares his Team’s successful novel environmental hygiene intervention, including the implementation of UV-C room decontamination technology in five high-risk patient units (including critical care, oncology, transplant and gastrointestinal surgery rooms), to address Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). Dr. Lowman will review a thorough summary of his Team’s initiative, including study design, protocols, keys to implementation and close collaboration with Facility administration. The WDGMC Team’s 26-month study was published in the March 2022 issue of The Journal of Hospital Infection.

NEW ADVANCES IN THE SCIENCE OF ULTRAVIOLET ROOM DISINFECTION:Â Â BRINGING TOGETHER CLINICAL, OPERATIONAL & FINANCIAL PERSPECTIVES
Session Overview: The continued threats posed by infectious diseases are a constant reminder of the importance of regular environmental surface disinfection in Healthcare-Associated Infections. Using novel technologies such as UV disinfection devices can assist with the disinfection of high-risk clinical areas and large-surface area environments. These technologies must be carefully evaluated through a clinical, financial, and operational lens.
